Lc Has No Answer For Boise Rallies Early And Late Lead Braves To 73-50 Win

Boise used its full-court pressure and athleticism for big runs early and late as the Braves spanked Lake City 73-50 in a non-league basketball game at LC on Saturday.

The Braves (2-0) opened a 24-8 lead in the first quarter. After LC rallied to within 40-39 midway in the third period, Boise again got untracked, outscoring the Timberwolves 33-11 over the final 11:44.

Perhaps what stung most about the loss, said LC coach Jim Winger, was the T-Wolves (1-1) didn’t answer Boise’s challenge.

“You can take a loss and go on, but the disappointing thing is we put our tail between our legs and I don’t want my teams to do that,” Winger said. “We got in the fetal position.”

Boise’s strength - its depth - was too much for the T-Wolves, too.

“That’s probably our greatest asset,” said Boise coach George Cox, whose team opened the season Friday with a 61-53 win at Coeur d’Alene. “That’s been a blessing and will continue to be. We’re ecstatic about coming up here and winning two games.”

Boise should win a lot of games. The Braves are favored by many to win the Southern Idaho Conference in the always-tough District III.

Despite finding itself in a big hole early, LC gamely fought back and caused Boise concern through the second quarter and early part of the third.

The first half was similar to a rugby scrum. Play was physical and the result was 28 fouls and 38 attempted free throws before halftime.

LC cut Boise’s lead below double digits in the second quarter when Jeff Schuh turned a steal into a layup to pull the T-Wolves within 30-22 with 3:30 remaining before halftime.

Two free throws by LC’s Justin Nipp made it 33-30 with 1:13 left. Boise led 37-33 at halftime.

A 3-pointer by Gabe Hern at the 5-minute mark of the third quarter pulled LC within 40-39.

Boise used a 12-2 spurt to close the period, and the avalanche continued in the final quarter.

Paul Fischer led balanced Boise with 16 points. Hern, saddled in foul trouble most of the first half, managed a game-high 17 including 5-of-5 shooting from 3-point range.

“Their pressure is pretty intense and we were constantly backpedaling,” Winger said. “We didn’t run much of anything, but the reason for that is they got us into a frenzy. We had a severe case of the brain cramps. They’re a good team, but I don’t think they’re necessarily 20-some points better than us.”
