‘Postman’ Rings Bells Around Metaline Falls

Get Variety on the phone: “The Postman” is a huge box-office smash, at least at the Clark Fork Theatre in Metaline Falls.

“We actually had a line for movie tickets,” said Metaline Falls Mayor Lee McGowan. “It’s a first.”

Long box-office lines have never been much of a problem in this town of 230, but “The Postman” is a special case. This Kevin Costner movie was filmed partially in and around Metaline Falls.

Filming dominated the town for most of the summer, and now the locals want to be the first to see it. The movie will open on Christmas Day at the Clark Fork Theatre, as well as at theaters nationwide.

“We decided to sell the first four nights in advance,” said the theater’s Roger Aydelott. “The first night sold out in 30 minutes.”

The other nights are selling quickly, too. “The Postman” will stay at the Clark Fork Theatre for two weeks. Most movies only run from Thursday through Sunday, but “The Postman” will run every night, plus matinees.

“There’s a lot of excitement locally,” said Aydelott. “I know there are lot of extras who will be coming up to see it.”

On a more uplifting note

KGA-AM will hold its annual 48-hour campout marathon in Riverfront Park beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

KGA program director and morning host Dean Allen and traffic and weather director Bob Lutz will spend 48 sleepless hours in a tent at the park’s turnout.

They’ll be accepting donations of unwrapped toys, non-perishable food items, clothing and cash. All proceeds benefit Toys for Tots, the Union Gospel Mission, Ogden Hall and the Spokane Food Bank.

KGA (1510 AM) will be broadcasting live throughout the campout, which will end Friday at 10 a.m.

Kitty Kelley’s reading

Author Kitty Kelley’s reading at Auntie’s Bookstore has been changed to Dec. 23 at 7 p.m. It was originally scheduled for a few days earlier.

Kelley is the Spokane native who wrote “The Royals.” The event will be free.

The sound of CBS

You know those CBS network promo spots with the “Welcome Home” theme? A local company, Production Group Audio Design, is responsible for all of the music and sound on those spots, as well as on the network’s logos and IDs.

This company is headquartered far from the production centers of L.A. and New York, but CBS obviously loves them anyway.

A commercial future?

Can’t you see yourself in a Bud ad? A Mentos commercial? A “Please Don’t Squeeze the Charmin” revival?

L.A. producer and talent scout Michael David McGuire, will be in Spokane next week to conduct workshops titled “Intro to Television Commercials.”

He’ll give a free talk on Dec. 15 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Spokane Civic Theatre, 1020 N. Howard. A more intense workshop, for a fee, will be held Dec. 16 at 6:30 p.m.

To register for either session, call Big Fish NW Talent 328-FISH.
