Shadle Park Grad’s Position Shift Leads To Bang-Up Senior Season

Jeremi Bauer’s year started with him in a new position and ended with him in the spotlight.

Bauer, a senior from Spokane (Shadle Park) at SUNY Brockport, was named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Upstate New York second all-star football team.

After three years at wide receiver, Bauer switched to cornerback and, in his second game, intercepted two passes and blocked an extra point.

By the end of the Golden Eagles’ 6-4 season, Bauer led all defensive backs in tackles with 68, had five interceptions, broke up nine passes, recovered a fumble, and blocked two extra points, one he returned 76 yards for a defensive extra point.

He twice was an ECAC defensive player of the week. On one of those occasions he was also a “Football Gazette” co-national defensive player of the week.

Academic awards

Thirteen University of Idaho athletes have been selected to Big West Conference all-academic teams.

Those honored by sport:

Football - Jeff Pankratz, Tony Uranga, Ed Dean and Rick Giampietri of Spokane (Central Valley).

Cross country - Antia Taruscio, Shannon Kearney, Andrea Jenkins of Rathdrum, Dan Bartosz, Bernd Schroeder and Luke Carrothers.

Volleyball - Kelly Holzer, Shalyne Lynch and Katie Kress.

To be eligible, those selected must have a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average, have attained a sophomore standing academically and competed in at least 50 percent of their team’s contests.

Basketball

Spokane Regional AAU will sponsor the first Santa Slammer tournament Dec. 29-30 at local gymnasiums for girls in grades 6-8 and boys in grades 5-8.

Entry fee is $180, not including the cost of AAU cards as needed. Cost per player not currently an AAU member is $10. Each team will play four games. Registration deadline is Dec. 16.

There’ll be a jamboree for YMCA and AAU boys and girls teams in grades 4-9 Dec. 27, 29 and 30 with both recreational and competitive divisions.

The non-tournament format will give teams four games. Junior high gyms in the Valley will be used. Entry fee is $125 per team and each player will receive a T-shirt. Proceeds benefit the Valley YMCA’s youth scholarship program. Deadline is Dec. 16.

The Spokane YMCA is forming a 3-on-3 league for girls ages 6-13 that will begin Jan. 5. Registration fee is $45. Deadline is Dec. 17.

Volunteers are needed to coach the teams and officiate the games.

College scene

Willamette University sophomore Devon Bakken of Spokane (University High School), was named to the All-Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges first team in volleyball.

Bakken, an outside hitter for the Salem, Ore., school, finished with 289 kills and a .243 hitting percentage. She was NCIC player of the week twice during the season.

Joe Deutsch, a 6-foot-5 junior from Medical Lake and transfer from Yakima Valley College, is a forward/ center on the University of Mary men’s basketball team in Bismarck, N.D.

Brian Guastella of Spokane (Gonzaga Prep) has been selected a captain of the Hamilton College hockey team in Clinton, N.Y., for his senior season.

Golf

Lindzee Frei, a senior at East Wenatchee High School, has signed a letter-of-intent to play for University of Idaho. Frei tied for second as a junior in the State AA tournament with rounds of 76-77. She also was a qualifier for the 1997 Junior World competition last summer.

Softball

A new organization will oversee adult recreation softball in the city of Spokane in 1998.

Spokane Softball Association, under the umbrella of the Spokane Amateur Softball Association and commissioner Clarence “Fuzzy” Buckenberger, has assumed the responsibility for league play and invitational tournaments. Spokane Metro Softball Association, which had run the program, dissolved because of financial problems.

Volleyball

Some of the nation’s most successful coaches and their players will be among the instructors at a clinic for boys and girls ages 10-18 Dec. 20 at Gonzaga University.

The NCAA-sanctioned Youth Education through Sports () clinic will be held in conjunction with the NCAA Final Four in Spokane.
