Mexico Plans To Reform Police, Court Rules

Associated Press

The Mexican government is proposing reforms to court and criminal procedures, a week after thousands of Mexicans marched to demand better policing.

Attorney General Jorge Madrazo Cuellar said Sunday the reforms will change bail, prosecution and property seizure practices, and will require changes to the Mexican constitution and criminal codes.

According to the text of a closed meeting Sunday between President Ernesto Zedillo and state governors, the government will submit the proposed changes to Congress in the next few weeks.

“The public is right to feel outraged, insecure and unsatisfied,” President Ernesto Zedillo said, referring to the crime wave that sparked the reforms.

Madrazo said the changes will allow easier seizure of drug traffickers’ properties and make it easier to fire police judged to be doing their jobs poorly.
