Cheney Awakes, Rips Sandpoint

High school basketball

Cheney kept a stiff upper lip Tuesday when Sandpoint reached halftime with a significant lead.

Pat Stiffler scored 11 points in the third quarter, when the visiting Blackhawks (2-1, 1-0) had six of their 12 steals to turn an eight-point deficit into a 15-point lead during a 62-37 boys Border League basketball win over the Bulldogs (1-2, 0-1).

Cheney’s Paul Malisani added eight rebounds. Chris Oyolokor and James Kiger added four rebounds apiece, plus two steals during Cheney’s comeback.

Eric Deno made 8 of 9 free throws in the fourth quarter, when the Eagles (1-2, 1-0) hit 15 of 19 to hold off the host Bengals (3-1, 0-1).

WV’s Brad Groh and Ryan Spivey combined to hit 10 of 15 field goals. Both had four fouls in the final quarter, forcing the Eagles into a delay game.

Lewiston’s 6-foot-8 post, Carson Egland, tied Spivey with a game-best seven rebounds.

WV shot 53 percent (19 of 36) from the floor, Lewiston 21 of 57 (37 percent).

Anna Getz had eight rebounds, eight assists and five steals, and the Blackhawks (2-1, 1-0) used first-half runs of 12-2 and 8-0 to defeat the host Bulldogs (1-5, 0-3).

Meghan Conrath scored eight as Cheney opened with a 12-2 lead. Sandpoint trimmed the lead to 22-18 in the second quarter before another Cheney spree.

Cheney shot 53 percent from 2-point range, Sandpoint 24 percent.
