$15.9 Million Mead Levy Nears Ballot Box

Voters in the Mead School District may be asked to approve a $15.9 million maintenance and operation levy for regular school business on March 10.

Under the levy’s proposal, $7.77 million would be collected in 1999 and $8.16 million collected in 2000. It will replace the current levy that expires in 1998.

The school board was scheduled to vote on a final figure and date for the levy at its scheduled meeting late Wednesday after press time.

Hill, Weinmann recognized

Deer Park School District superintendent Glenys Hill and Terry Weinmann, assistant superintendent for the Riverside School District, were both recognized by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission as two people interested in promoting safe roadways.

Hill and Weinmann were cited for their work on the North Spokane County Y Corridor Safety Project.

“Their challenge was to motivate and coordinate the efforts of a large, diverse group of people who analyzed the traffic problems on these roads (Highways 2 and 395) and developed a plan to address those problems,” the commission said.

“More law enforcement activity, engineering improvements and a comprehensive public education effort are now underway, in large part because of the dedication of these two individuals,” the commission said.

Christmas Time

Some of Santa’s helpers from Mount Spokane High School will pay a visit to first and second graders at Meadow Ridge Elementary School on Tuesday.

About 130 National Honor Society students, masquerading as elves, also plan to bring one of Santa’s reindeer to the school at 11 a.m. It is not known which reindeer will be at the school.

A spokesman for Santa did say, however, that Rudolph won’t be able to attend, due to a prior engagement.

Music students at Evergreen Elementary School will perform for the holidays on Tuesday.

The program will be held at Whitworth’s Cowles Auditorium at 7 p.m. For more information call 465-6400.
