Belfour Gets 7th Shutout

Associated Press

Ed Belfour had to stop only 12 shots for his franchise-record seventh shutout as the Dallas Stars extended their home winning streak to seven games with a 3-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday.

Belfour broke the club shutout mark of six set by Cesare Maniago of the Minnesota North Stars in 1967-68 and tied his career high for a season.

The 12 shots matched the Stars’ team record for fewest by an opponent.

Joe Nieuwendyk’s wrist shot from the middle of the right circle produced the only goal of the first period at 13:50. The veteran center’s 16th goal gave him the club lead.

Roy stops 51 shots

In Toronto, Patrick Roy made 51 saves, including four during a five-second span midway through the third period of the Colorado Avalanche’s 2-2 tie with the Maple Leafs.

Colorado scored on its first shot, when Rene Corbet beat Felix Potvin at 11:26 of the opening period.

Other games

In Montreal, Vincent Damphousse scored 55 seconds into overtime to cap the Canadiens’ rally from a three-goal, third-period deficit for a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues.

The Canadiens were thoroughly dominated for 40 minutes before they staged a frenzied comeback, which included two goals 20 seconds apart in the last three minutes of the third.

In Chicago, Keith Tkachuk scored a power-play goal with 7:23 left in regulation as the Phoenix Coyotes rallied for a 3-3 tie with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Kurri to retire

Colorado Avalanche right wing Jari Kurri, the NHL’s highest-scoring European player, will retire after this season. Kurri, 37, needs two goals to reach 600 for his career.

Kurri, a Finn, was a member of five Stanley Cup-winning teams with the Edmonton Oilers from 1984-90, playing alongside Wayne Gretzky for four of them. Along with 598 goals, Kurri has 787 assists in 1,210 regular season games and is a seven-time All-Star.

4 earn Patrick Award

Olympic champions Neal Broten (1980) and John Mayasich (1960), and executives Max McNab and Peter Karmanos were selected as recipients of the Lester Patrick Award for outstanding service to hockey in the United States.

Broten was a member of the New Jersey Devils Stanley Cup champions in 1995 and was the first U.S.born player to score more than 100 points in a season.
