Gsl Wrestlers See Open Door

Mike Vlahovich And Chris Derrick S Staff writer

This year when Greater Spokane League wrestlers advance to regionals, something will be missing.

Moses Lake, a 13-time state champion, last year’s runner-up and the dominant regional program, has taken its 10 returning starters and six state veterans to the 3A ranks while the GSL competes at the 4A level.

“That makes a big difference for the state tournament,” said Gonzaga Prep coach Phil McLean. “I was thinking, with them out, I send more guys to state.”

Last season McLean had four state qualifiers, all whom placed.

“Out of all my years coaching, there’s only one kid I took to state who didn’t place,” said McLean. “If we take six we’re in the trophy hunt.”

Without Moses Lake last year, it would have been possible for five wrestlers from as many GSL schools to have finished higher.

“It leaves some room,” agreed North Central coach Randy Cloke. “Then again it makes space for another Big Nine kid.”

The GSL returns 32 wrestlers from last year’s regionals.

New season, new school

Lind football coach Todd Kent has replaced Arnold Brown as Rosalia’s boys basketball coach.

Kent guided Lind to the State B-8 quarterfinals. Lind’s opponent in its playoff loss? Rosalia.

Home is where you find it

Ferris’ 40-member gymnastics team is practicing at Spokane Elite Gymnastics this year.

The move opens more room for Saxons basketball teams and provides the gymnasts with some better equipment. Ferris still practices at ‘home’ on Saturdays.

No backing down

Brewster defeated Kettle Falls 36-30 in a non-league wrestling match Dec. 4, with six crucial points coming on Heath Brown’s pin.

Brown, competing at 158 pounds, is legally blind. State guidelines aren’t clear on the issue, but anyone opposing a blind wrestler is apparently required to keep constant contact.

Bowman to Stanford

Sandpoint High standout wide receiver Caleb Bowman has canceled the rest of his travel plans.

A trip to Stanford last weekend confirmed his desire to play at the Palo Alto, Calif., school. Bowman gave the Cardinal an oral commitment Sunday.

Bowman had trips scheduled to UCLA this weekend and Colorado the following weekend. He visited California earlier in the fall. He turned down a scholarship offer from Nebraska.
