Sonatas Scheduled At Cathedral

Sunday marks the beginning of several months of special performances at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside.

Every Sunday through May, baroque violinist Karen Walthisen and organist James Barrett will perform the complete 17th century “Rosenkranz Sonaten,” Sonatas on the Mysteries for the Rosary, by Heinrich Bibier.

The 15 sonatas will be presented at 10:50 a.m. as preludes to each Sunday’s Mass at 11.

The performances will roughly coincide with the liturgical celebration of the events depicted.

The Joyful Mysteries will be performed through Jan. 18, followed by the Sorrowful Mysteries in March and the Glorious Mysteries, April 26 through May 24.

In concert

The Chancel Choir of Central Lutheran Church, 309 W. Fifth, will present excepts from “Messiah” during its 11 a.m. service on Sunday.

Paul Bruggemeier will direct with Keith Lundquist accompanying. Kelly Farris, concertmaster with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra, will be concertmaster for Sunday’s production.

Will sing for food

The Unity Church of Truth, on the corner of 29th and Bernard, will host a concert to benefit the Spokane Food Bank at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The event will feature pianist Carol Miyamoto, vocalist Abbey Crawford and several student performers.

Admission is $3, or $2 and a non-perishable food item.
