Today’s Nfl Matchups

Terry Bannon Chicago Tribune

Redskins at Giants

Line: Giants by 3.

Last meeting: They played to a 7-7 tie at Washington on Nov. 23.

Key stats: Giants have held opposing quarterbacks to a 64.4 passer rating, lowest in the NFL.

Worth watching: Jeff Hostetler, who led Giants to victory in Super Bowl XXV, gets second start for Redskins. Giants hope Danny Kanell has settled down after a late-season slump.

Outlook: A win or tie gives the Giants the NFC East championship and home wildcard game. Giants’ run defense should dominate, especially because Redskins again expect to go without RB Terry Allen (ankle).

Steelers at Patriots

Line: Patriots by 3.

Last meeting: Steelers won 41-27 at Pittsburgh on Dec. 16, 1995.

Key stats: Steelers have beaten Patriots five straight.

Worth watching: Pittsburgh QB Kordell Stewart is the first player in NFL history with 20 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing touchdowns in a season. Will a sore shoulder stop Patriots RB Curtis Martin again?

Outlook: Last week at Jacksonville, New England continued its climb out of midseason lethargy with its third consecutive win. Steelers haven’t proven they can beat a quality team on the road (losing at Jacksonville, Kansas City, Philadelphia).
