Staff And Wire Reports

Mountain biking

About 16,500 Diamondback mountain bikes have been recalled because their chains can break, causing a rider to lose control of the bicycle and fall.

There have been 75 reports of chains breaking with four injuries, including a broken arm, cuts and bruises.

The 1998 Diamondback bicycles under recall include the following models: Sherwood, Lakeside, Interval, Expert, Voyager I, Voyager II, Sorrento, Sorrento SE and Wildwood DX.

The bikes were sold from July through November at authorized Diamondback dealers nationwide for about $300 to $600.

Consumers who have the bikes should stop using them and telephone their local Diamondback dealers to have the chain replaced. For the location of the nearest dealer, call (800) 776-7641. For information on the recall, call the manufacturer, Sachs Bicycle Components, (800) 343-8586. , DataTimes
