An 8-year-old boy died Sunday after he and two other children fell through ice into the frigid water of a flooded sand and gravel pit.
Authorities said Garrett Tuttle II was under the water for about 20 minutes before searchers wearing wet suits and using probes located him. He was taken to Denver Children’s Hospital, where he died shortly after 5 p.m.
Six-year-old Rachel Salzer was listed in critical, unstable condition at Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Her brother, 7-year-old Joseph, was able to get out of the water and run home for help.
Firefighters pulled Rachel from the water a few minutes later, authorities said. Joseph was treated at the scene.
