Vigil To Be Held For Victim

Laura Shireman Staff writer

The family of Nicholas Scherling, a 13-year-old who was killed by a hit-and-run driver Nov. 10, will have a candlelight vigil in his honor tonight at 7:30 p.m.

The vigil is planned at the scene of the accident, along Seltice Way near its intersection with McGuire Road.

“We lost a very special child and we need to remember why we lost him,” said Mark Scherling, the boy’s father.

He encouraged the community to bring candles to the vigil and to concentrate on safety issues involved with Nicholas Scherling’s death.

“It’s going to be a touching event, anyway. I’ve spent a lot of time there,” Mark Scherling said. “It’s been tough, but it’s not just tough for me. The whole community lost a very special boy.”

Nicholas Scherling was killed Nov. 10 while he was walking his bicycle home from Post Falls Middle School, where he attended seventh grade. Since his death, an unofficial memorial has grown at the scene of the accident. Community members have left flowers, a pair of crosses and other memorabilia in his memory.

The woman suspected of hitting Scherling, Connie C. Bickley, 54, has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of the accident.

“We put our Christmas tree outside this year in hopes that the community will help decorate it with an ornament for Nick,” Mark Scherling said.
