Ferris Works Way Past Cv

GSL boys

What Ferris and Central Valley lacked in style they made up for in intensity.

The result was a 54-48 victory for the Saxons in an early Greater Spokane League showdown at CV Tuesday night.

The Bears, playing just their second game, never led but battled back from a 12-point deficit to take it down to the wire.

After a three-point play by CV’s Bryan Depew cut the Ferris lead to 46-45 with 2:45 to play, the Saxons (4-0, 2-0) had an 8-3 run to close it out.

Chris Watts scored his second straight basket after an offensive rebound and added two free throws to make it 50-45. After Nate McFarlane hit a 3 for CV (1-1, 1-1), Andre Atkins had a tip-in and the Saxons added two free throws in the final seconds.

“It was not particularly pretty,” Ferris coach Wayne Gilman said. “CV did a good job of being aggressive and pounding the boards. If you can give up 21 offensive rebounds and still win, that’s OK.”

Watts finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds and Atkins had 13 points, nine in the first half when Ferris opened a 31-22 lead.

The Bears hit just 17 of 70 shots and only 13 of 21 free throws, including 10 of 17 in the first half when the Saxons were threatened with foul trouble.

“I think we shot like we still had shoulder pads on,” CV coach Rick Sloan said. “A lot of our younger guys were a little tight. I was pleased with the patience we had on offense and the unselfishness the kids showed.”

Depew led CV with 14 points and eight rebounds.
