Rjr Nabisco Slashing 3,000 Tobacco Jobs

Joe Camel is getting company on the unemployment line.

The cigarette maker that recently laid off the hip advertising character under pressure from smoking critics is slashing nearly 3,000 jobs from its worldwide tobacco operations - about 10 percent of the work force.

Most of the cuts - 2,600 - are coming overseas where RJR Nabisco hopes to redeploy its resources where profit prospects are brightest from its Winston, Camel and other cigarette brands.
