Alpine skiing

49 Degrees North opens Holiday Night Skiing tonight from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will continue for three weekends. Tonight is Cheap Ski Night and the cost is only $4.93 per person. Also, starting at 10:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. every day, free beginner lessons will be offered for skiers and snowboarders with the purchase of a lift ticket. Info: (509) 935-6649.

At Mission Ridge, a Demo Day will be hosted Sunday where by buying a lift ticket for $17, skiers can try out the latest skis and snowboards for free. Ages 6 and under ski free. Info: 663-6543.

Those headed to Canada can also hit the slopes as Kimberely and Fairmont open today. Red Mountain opens Saturday with 20 percent of their slopes open.

Nordic skiing

Mount Spokane ski trails gained a few inches of snow this week and are groomed for the weekend. But don’t try to get a recorded update on their nordic hotline. Someone broke into Selkirk Lodge Sunday and stole the message machine. The park has no funds to replace it immediately.

Snow finally was sticking this week in the Methow Valley, where about 100 kilometers of trails should be groomed for this weekend. Info: (800) 682-5787.

Snowmobiling

Depending on weather, the Spokane County Parks Department hopes to start grooming trails on Mt. Spokane and in the area Monday. Currently, trails are pretty rough due to lack of snow.

Trails are ready to go and were groomed as recently as Wednesday by Ski Bluewood on Blue Mountain.
