A 2-month-old boy whose mother accidentally left him on top of her car fell off when the woman drove away, tumbling face down in a busy intersection.
The infant, who was strapped in a car seat, suffered some cuts and scrapes but was not severely injured. He was in fair condition Sunday.
“The baby had abrasions to the head, but it doesn’t look serious,” Police Sgt. Gene Klimek said. “It looks like the baby seat really did its job.”
The outcome could have been much different if truck driver Michael Prough had not noticed a car seat and baby blanket in the middle of the road.
“It was really the blanket that turned my head,” he said. “A blanket, a car seat. I said, ‘I’ve got to go back.”’ Police said no charges would be filed against the infant’s 24-year-old mother, who accidentally left the baby on the top of her car Friday afternoon after getting her 6-year-old and 4-year-old into the car.
She traveled about two blocks before the baby slid off, and she drove another five miles before realizing what had happened, Klimek said.
