Rogers Home Ec Students Hand Out Cookies

More than 100 Rogers High School students shared a little goodwill with senior citizens and other Hillyard neighbors last week when they baked and distributed cookies.

About 130 students enrolled in home economics and community service classes delivered the cookies to various nursing homes on the North Side and residents near the high school.

“It was a great project, there was a lot of hands-on by the kids,” said Rogers teacher Nancy Carlson.

The students obtained lists of seniors and nursing homes through the Northeast Community Center.

Crabtree named principal of year

The Elementary School Principals’ Association recently selected Regal Elementary principal Mike Crabtree as the region’s principal of the year.

Crabtree was recognized by his peers for “his excellence in education.” He has been Regal Elementary School’s principal for seven years.

He began his career in Spokane schools in 1977 as a substitute teacher. He was also an intermediate grade teacher at Arlington Elementary and was principal at Ridgeview Elementary.

“Mr. Crabtree is a most positive and energetic principal dedicated to the young people in this community,” said Dr. Cynthia Lambarth, Associate Superintendent of Spokane Public Schools.

Crabtree cited his staff at Regal as the reason he won the award.

“When we help children, it’s an entire team effort,” Crabtree said. “This recognition is for all the Regal staff. When we work together, we make things happen for students.”

Bohlen named social worker of year

The Washington Association of School Social Workers named Kathy Bohlen the state’s social worker of the year. Bohlen has worked at Shiloh Hills Elementary School since 1988.

The association annually recognizes a school social worker who personifies the standards of professional social work practice in schools.

As an elected officer in the WASSW, Bohlen has represented social workers in education reform as a liaison with the Washington Education Association for the last two years.

During the holiday season, Bohlen recruits community businesses and organizations to help needy families at the school.

In February, she participates in activities to teach children the importance of helping others, said Beverly Austin, president of the WASSW.
