Dollar Mixed As Tokyo Stocks Drop

Associated Press

The dollar was mixed Friday, rising against the Japanese yen after Tokyo stocks dropped but falling to a one-month low vs. the British pound as traders sought U.S. and European havens from Asia’s troubled economies.

The dollar also slipped vs. the German mark in extremely thin holiday trading as the pound and the mark strengthened against the yen.

The Japanese currency was widely sold after the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s main index fell 3.25 percent on worries about possible further corporate failures over the weekend. Japan’s financial system has been rocked in recent months by a string of bankruptcies, several of which have been announced on weekends.
