Ernest “Polly” Rosborough, considered the father of modern fly fishing in the American West, died Thursday in Medford, Ore. He was 95.

Denise Levertov, a major American poet whose work dealt with social and political themes such as the Vietnam War and the trial of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann, died Saturday of lymphoma in Seattle. She was 74.

Third baseman Jose Oliva died in a car accident outside Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on Monday, the day he was to sign a Triple A contract with the Seattle Mariners. He was 26.

DECISIONS

Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, the international terrorist known as “Carlos,” was convicted Wednesday in Paris of the murder of two French police agents and a Lebanese informant in a shooting 22 years ago and sentenced to life in prison.

THIS WEEK

The sentencing phase of Terry Nichols’ federal trial in Denvier begins Monday.

Thursday: The 80th annual Rose Bowl game.
