Blues’ Hull Out For Six Weeks

Associated Press

Brett Hull will be sidelined up to six weeks following surgery for a broken hand Sunday, meaning the star right will miss the Jan. 18 All-Star game but be ready for the Nagano Olympics in February.

The St. Louis Blues said Hull had two pins surgically inserted in his left hand. The injury happened during the first period of Saturday’s 5-5 tie with Anaheim.

“A videotape of the play is going to the league today,” Blues general manager Larry Pleau said Sunday.

Hull, who scored on his first two shots of the game, was struck on his left hand by a stick wielded by Anaheim’s Tomas Sandstrom. Sandstrom, known for an aggressive stick, was not penalized. He said he did not know how Hull got hurt.

“Who did it?” Sandstrom asked after the game.

When told he was identified as the culprit, Sandstrom said: “It must have been in the corner. It wasn’t that bad.”

Blues coach Joel Quenneville had no doubts about who was responsible.

“He (Sandstrom) didn’t try to hit the puck or the stick,” the coach said. “He tried to hit the hands.

AHL player arrested

Syracuse Crunch forward Paul Ferone was arrested in New Haven, Conn., during an AHL game against the Beast of New Haven after allegedly swinging a stick at a heckling fan. Ferone confronted the fan while leaving the ice after the second period. Ferone was charged with third-degree assault and released on a promise to appear in court Feb. 6.

Rangers rally past Bruins

Brian Skrudland scored with 23 seconds left Sunday to cap a three-goal rally that carried the New York Rangers to a 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins in New York. Skrudland took a pass from Bill Berg and beat Bruins goaltender Byron Dafoe for his sixth goal of the season.
