Jordan Scores 41 To Tie Mark

Associated Press

Michael Jordan scored 41 points for his NBA record tying 787th consecutive double-digit scoring game and Dennis Rodman foiled Don Nelson’s intentional fouling strategy as the Chicago Bulls defeated Dallas 111-105 Monday night.

Rodman just missed a triple-double, getting 27 rebounds, 11 points and eight assists, as Chicago stretched its winning streak to eight games and extended the Mavericks’ losing streak to 12.

Jordan’s second straight 40-plus-point game enabled him to match Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s string of double-figure performances. Jordan, who last failed to score at least 10 points on March 22, 1986, can break the record tonight at Minnesota.

Rodman got his season-high point total and matched his career highs in free throws attempted (12) and made (nine) thanks to Bubba Wells.

The Dallas rookie, who had played only 45 minutes all season, was put into the game at the end of the second and third quarters expressly to foul Rodman - a 39 percent free-throw shooter entering the game. Wells grabbed Rodman away from the ball six times, but Rodman got hot from the line.

Other games

In Houston, David Wesley scored 21 of his season-high 32 points in the first quarter, leading a barrage of 3-point shooting as the Charlotte Hornets beat the Rockets 120-101 to end a three-game road losing streak.

The Hornets, second in the NBA in 3-point shooting at 37 percent, connected on 12 of 18 from behind the arc and shot 60 percent overall.

Clyde Drexler and Kevin Willis topped Houston with 18 points apiece and Charles Barkley had 12 rebounds. The Rockets took 24 3-point shots, making only nine.

In East Rutherford, N.J., rookie Keith Van Horn had a career-high 32 points and 10 rebounds and the Nets avenged their worst loss of the season by beating the Washington Wizards 99-91.

Jayson Williams added 19 points and 22 rebounds as the Nets prevailed despite making just two field goals in the fourth quarter. Neither team played particularly well in a game with 57 personal fouls and 37 turnovers.

Bucks’ Johnson gives to alma mater

Milwaukee Bucks center Ervin Johnson donated $100,000 to his alma mater, the University of New Orleans, to be used toward building the Ervin Johnson Fitness Center.

The donation coincides with Monday’s retirement of his number by the university. Johnson played for the Privateers from 1989-93, setting records for career rebounds with 1,287, blocked shots with 294 and games started with 116. He was taken by the Seattle SuperSonics with the 23rd pick in the 1993 draft.
