The Rose Report

From Wire Reports

Briefing

THE WORD

“I’m sick of people asking me about getting in trouble. That was almost seven years ago. That’s a long time ago. I’ve changed my life.

“I don’t want to be remembered as some criminal who played football, I wanted to be remembered as a football player who worked hard.”

Michael Black, 23, WSU running back

“I want to tell you, if Washington State is doing (my offense) properly, it’ll kill Michigan with it.”

Jack Neumeier

78, credited with inventing WSU’s spread offense in the 1970s

“I’ve never met Ryan Leaf. But just from seeing him in interviews, I can tell he’s going to be a cocky guy who will go Woodson’s way.”

Chris Floyd, 22, Michigan fullback

LOOK BACK

Until 1923, the Tournament of Roses Committee selected the two teams that would compete in the New Year’s Day game. From 1923-46 the West Coast representative was allowed to choose its opponent from the East. But in 1946 a five-year contract was signed between the Big Ten and the old Pacific Coast Conference to select their own representatives. In 1961 and ‘62 the Pacific-8 picked its own opponent. Since then the two conferences have chosen their own representatives.
