UI Pulls Out Road Win, Takes Over East’s Top Spot

Melisa McDaniel hit two free throws with 9 seconds remaining as the University of Idaho women’s basketball team overcame poor shooting to pick up a 63-59 Big West Conference win over Cal State Fullerton on Friday night at Fullerton, Calif.

The win was Idaho’s fourth straight and moves it into sole possession of first place in the Eastern Division with a 4-2 record. For the third time in four games, Idaho (9-9, 4-2) had to rely on a late second-half surge. The Vandals trailed 56-46 with 4:51 remaining but went on a 17-3 run to clinch the win.

McDaniel scored a season-high 12 points.

UI’s Alli Nieman finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, both team highs. Nieman, who earned Big West player of the week honors this week, had her second straight double-double and her third in four games.

Idaho travels to UC Irvine for a Sunday afternoon game. The Anteaters beat Boise State 72-58 in other Big West action Friday night.
