Cda Girls In Regionals

Coeur d’Alene had to weather a second-half Sandpoint comeback to earn the final spot in the Region I A-1 girls high school basketball tournament.

But sparked by post Kellie Stern and point guard Tatti Stranger, the Vikings defeated the Bulldogs 43-39 Monday night in Coeur d’Alene.

The Vikings (7-14) will face Lake City at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday in first-round action in the Lake City gym. Post Falls and Lewiston meet in the opener at 6.

Sandpoint’s season ended at 2-19.

If a 25-5 first-half lead left the Vikings feeling in control, Sandpoint gave them something to think about. Sparked by Bobbi Jo Jensen, who scored 12 of her game-high 14 points the second half, the Bulldogs rallied to tie at 37 before Stern and Stranger put it away for CdA.

Stern scored 12 points and Stranger had six points, including some clutch free throws in the final 90 seconds, five steals, three assists and two rebounds.

Hockey

Billings Bulls owner Eric Bonanno, a former Spokane Chiefs employee and the vice president of the American Hockey League’s Frontier Conference, will serve as acting commissioner of the conference.

A full-time replacement is being sought after commissioner Gary Firko resigned Friday. Firko, of Littleton, Colo., said he will work in an advisory capacity for a smooth transition until a successor can be named.

The league includes teams in Billings, Bozeman, Butte and Helena in Montana and Jackson Hole and Casper in Wyoming.
