Dogs To Get Vests For Line-Of-Fire Duty

Compiled From Wire Services

Canine cops can pant a little easier.

NYPD police dogs trained to carry infrared videocameras into buildings to search for suspects are being outfitted with bulletproof vests, the Daily News said Friday.

“The vest gives the dog maximum protection, just like ourselves,” said Sgt. Steve Berger, coordinator of the unit that will test two vest models on 13 dogs.

The nylon-shelled canine vests have some drawbacks. They weigh 6-1/2 pounds, can be restrictive and warm. But dog handlers said the dogs have responded well to the training.

Last week, Zeus and Copper, German shepherds, were suited up and ready to try the vests during a standoff situation. But they were held back when commanders deemed the situation unsafe for the hostages, the News said. xxxx
