Colville Still Has Cheney’s Number

Frontier League

Before Saturday night’s game, Colville was the lone team to have beaten Cheney in Frontier League boys basketball.

Colville’s mastery continued on Cheney’s home court, as swarming defense and balanced offense produced a 54-49 win.

The Indians (7-2, 10-6) can do no worse than tie for first place if they win out against East Valley, West Valley and Pullman. Colville has one first-place finish in its Frontier history - a tie with Cheney and WV three years ago.

“We at least control our destiny now,” said Colville coach Bill Pilgeram, whose team bounced back after losing to Riverside on Friday.

Cheney (6-2, 11-5) dropped one-half game behind Colville with four league games remaining.

The Indians entered with three starters averaging between 10.3 and 11.1 points per league game. That trend continued, as four Indians scored between nine and 11.

“We are eight deep and have a starter injured (Paul Smith, knee) who makes us nine deep,” Pilgeram said.

Brandon True scored 10, but all came consecutively as a 27-25 Cheney lead late in the first half became a 35-29 Colville edge midway through the third quarter. Cheney never came closer than four points after that.

Cheney’s leading scorer, Paul Malisani (14.7 ppg) picked up two fouls in the first 2:27 and didn’t play the rest of the half. Malisani returned in the third quarter, but stingy Colville held the Blackhawks to five shots during the quarter.
