Nwc Pulls Upset In League Tourney

Abi Ogle proved to be a secret weapon as Northwest Christian was the only school to disrupt the seedings in the first round of the Panorama League girls high school basketball tournament Monday night.

Ogle scored 13 points, well above her season average, to second the team-leading 14 of Allyson Clouse as the visiting Crusaders upset Republic 44-34.

NWC (10-11), the No. 3 seed out of the South, now visits South champ Selkirk (18-3) in the second round Friday. Selkirk overpowered visiting Wellpinit 44-18. Wellpinit (9-10) visits Republic (13-8).

In other first-round games, North champ Northport belted visiting Springdale 68-36 and South No. 2 St. George’s was a 49-32 winner over Columbia in Spokane.

St. George’s (13-8) visits Northport (19-2) and Springdale (8-12) takes on Columbia (7-11) at Hunters in Friday’s other games.

The Crusaders’ 20-5 advantage in the third quarter, when the Tigers managed just two field goals, pulled NWC from a 21-15 halftime deficit en route to victory.

Lucy Wilson and Melissa Friend had 12 points each for Republic, and Wilson pulled down 17 rebounds.

Cherea Davis and Wenchi Liu combined for 19 of the Dragons’ 30 steals as their smothering, full-court pressure paved the way to victory.

Miranda Routh-Corker had 16 points and Liu 15 for St. George’s. Lisa Dale led the Lions, who managed just 13 field goals in the game, with 10 points.

The Mustangs had three players in double figures, led by Karen Sauvola’s 22 points, and came up with 22 steals in dispatching the Chargers.

Sauvola also had 14 rebounds and Jessica Sell had nine assists to go with her 13 points for Northport.

Rachea Allert scored eight of her 10 points in the third quarter as the Rangers broke open a close game against the tight-checking Redskins.

With Wellpinit holding Selkirk’s usual scoring leaders, Tara Porter and Molly Carlson, to 10 points between them, Marcie Dury (11) and Allert picked up the slack.

Miranda Payne led Wellpinit with 12.

The visitors from Washington missed all 10 of their first-quarter shots and Margaret SiJohn scored 13 of her 21 in the period as the Knights (12-6) jumped on top early in doubling the Wildcats at Plummer, Idaho.

SiJohn had 17 points and 10 rebounds by halftime. Hillery Merk led Colton with 12 points.
