Rep. Lee Hamilton To Retire

Compiled From Wire Services

Rep. Lee Hamilton, who as House chairman of the Iran-Contra committee rebuked Oliver North and President Reagan for their role in the affair, said Monday he will retire from Congress when his term ends.

The 65-year-old moderate Democrat gained a reputation as a calm-spoken expert on foreign affairs during his 17 terms in the House.

“I am deeply grateful to the people of southern Indiana for placing their trust in me for these many years, and I hope they feel that I have served them well,” he said in a statement.
