Three Sought In Downtown Stabbing

From Staff And Wire Reports

FOR THE RECORD (February 12, 1997): Correction: A man was stabbed Monday night in the 3200 block of East Sprague. A headline on a story in Tuesday’s paper incorrectly said the stabbing occurred downtown.

Three people are being sought in connection with the stabbing of an intoxicated man Monday night, Spokane police said.

The victim, who suffered numerous stab wounds in his shoulders and back, told police he was attacked between 7:30 and 8 p.m. by two men and a woman in the 3200 block of East Sprague.

Bartenders from the Sage Tavern, E. 3248 Sprague, and Duffy’s Tavern, E. 3302 Sprague, said the victim was in their bars prior to the attack.

Police said the motive appears to be robbery, although the man’s wallet wasn’t taken.

The victim, whose name was not released, was listed in serious condition at a local hospital.

Shelly Howard, a bartender at The Sage, said she stopped serving the man that night because he appeared to be drunk.

“He came back in here looking for help, and he was just all cut up,” Howard said. “He was bleeding from his shoulders and back, and his chin was cut open pretty good. It was pretty icky.”

Howard said the victim is white and in his 30s, about 5 feet 7 inches tall.

“He was pretty much a newcomer to the bar,” Howard said. “He started hanging around here around the time of the Super Bowl.”

Police said they were having a hard time getting accurate information from the man because he was so intoxicated.
