Rogers Can’t Stick With Prep In End

Latching onto a tradition from two years ago when they advanced to the final day of the regional basketball tournament, the Rogers Pirates have again taken to wearing good luck Band-Aids.

Now the adhesive strips are the only things helping them hold on to their slim playoff hopes.

Gonzaga Prep controlled the Pirates for almost three quarters before holding on for a 63-57 win at Prep Friday night.

The win gave the Bullpups (8-10, 6-8) a two-game lead over the Pirates (7-11, 4-10) for the final playoff berth for Greater Spokane League boys teams with two games to play.

“We still have a chance but we don’t control our own destiny. That’s the key,” Rogers coach Rick Mergenthaler said.

At the other end of the standings, Mead (8-7, 10-9) knocked 10th-ranked Shadle Park (13-2, 15-4) out of a tie for the lead, ending the Highlanders’ 13-game winning streak with a 46-40 upset at Shadle Park.

Rogers turned destiny over to the Bullpups, who converted 19 Pirates turnovers through three quarters into 23 points.

Mike Kocharhook scored six of his 11 points in the third quarter and Prep got seven points from reserves Mark Doolittle, Jay Crowell and Mark Egger to open a 54-32 lead. A layup by Kocharhook started a 9-0 run that produced the bulge. Egger converted an offensive rebound and Doolittle followed with a pair of free throws before feeding Crowell for a three-point play.

“I thought we had excellent movement on offense with great passing and great shot selection,” Prep coach Mike Haugen said. “We did a good job pressuring their shooters.”

The Pirates closed the third quarter with five quick points to close the gap to 54-37 and opened the fourth with eight more without Prep attempting a shot.

The Pirates’ Brett Oglesbee, who struggled most of the game, hit a 3 and made a nice drive off a feed from Sam Dempsey to make it 60-55 with 1:17 left but the Pirates couldn’t foul quick enough to get closer.

Tyson Thielman, who led Prep with 16 points, hit 3 of 4 foul shots in the final 44 seconds to ice the win.

“We were running the ball good and playing good defense on them,” said Shane Hartnett, who had 11 points and nine rebounds for Prep. “They started hitting their shots and we weren’t running (the offense) as well. They put on a press so it wasn’t as easy.”

Ken Oglesbee helped keep Rogers close in the first half with 11 of his 14 points, but the Pirates were hurt by the absence of De’Andrey Mosby, the league’s leading scorer, who sat much of the first half in foul trouble before finishing with 17 points.

“I don’t know why, we didn’t show up defensively in the first quarter.” Mergenthaler said, pointing to a shot chart that showed most Prep baskets coming from inside. “We picked our intensity up late but not soon enough.”

J.J. Klaus hit four free throws in the final minutes as the Panthers upset the Highlanders at Shadle Park.

Klaus finished with 12 points for the balanced Panthers. Chris Anderson led Shadle with 17 points.

Andy Dunham hit four of his five 3-pointers in the second quarter to lead the Titans (8-6, 10-8) past the Indians (1-13, 3-15) at NC.
