Albright Pushes Nato Expansion Plan

Compiled From Wire Services

Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright stepped up an already frenzied pace of diplomacy on the expansion of NATO Tuesday by calling for negotiations on the admission of new members to be completed by the end of this year.

Addressing NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, Albright also sought to allay concerns in Russia about the planned eastward extension of its old Cold War adversary to the borders of the former Soviet Union. She suggested the establishment of a joint NATO-Russian brigade and said that Russian and NATO planners could work together at the alliance’s major military commands.
