Logging Of Storm-Damaged Trees On Tubbs Hill To Begin In March

The removal of storm-damaged trees from Tubbs Hill will take place in March, city forester Karen Hinson said Thursday.

Logging of the popular recreation area had been scheduled for February, but was delayed partly by bad weather, Hinson said. Snow that thawed, then refroze, made work impossible on the heavily damaged north and east sides of the lakeside hill.

The trees have been marked for cutting. Ground crews will go in on March 3, Hinson said. A helicopter will begin work about March 17, and will need seven or eight days to remove the downed trees from the lakeside property.

Tubbs Hill is closed for safety reasons, although Hinson acknowledged that some hikers are using the trails anyway. It will be especially important that people stay out when the logging begins, she said.

“We needed the good weather in order to get the logs out. Unfortunately, good weather also brings the people out.”
