U-Hi Loses, But Gets Consolation Prize Titans Gain No. 3 Seed At District Thanks To North Central’s Upset Over Central Valley

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose and occasionally you do both.

At least that’s how it worked out for University Thursday night.

Ferris put an exclamation point on its second-straight Greater Spokane League boys basketball championship by running past the visiting Titans 60-48 Thursday night.

Jason Weatherred scored a career-high 23 points and the fourth-ranked Saxons had 22 assists on 24 baskets.

“We’re a lot better running the ball than setting up in our half-court offense,” said Weatherred, a 6-foot-5 post who made 10 of 15 shots, mostly layups. “Every time we run well we have a real good game. The whole team finally stepped up against U-Hi. The last two years we’ve struggled against them.”

Still, the Titans came away with the third seed for next week’s district tournament because North Central upset Central Valley 55-54. Word of the upset reached the Ferris gym before the game started.

“I have no idea if that had an impact on our play, I’d like to think it didn’t,” U-Hi coach Jay Humphrey said. “Ferris executed very well. They had a good transition game. Their big guys outran our big guys. Any time a team gets easy baskets early, their confidence just swells. We battled that all night.

University finished in a three-way tie for third with CV and Mead, but holds the tiebreaker. That means the Titans and Mead open district against teams they have beaten twice.

The Saxons (18-1, 15-1) outscored the Titans (11-9, 9-7) 20-7 in the second quarter to take control of the game.

The run actually began with the last two baskets of the first quarter to forge a 12-12 tie, and the first three of the second. In just over half of the second quarter, Charlie Gordon, Weatherred and Tommy Servine had two baskets each, producing a 13-2 surge.

“It was a good win for us,” Ferris coach Wayne Gilman said. “There were some times I thought we played very well and there were times I didn’t always feel that way even though we won.”

The Saxons had a huge rebounding edge, and five different players had at least four assists.

In the process, the Saxons were frustrating U-Hi leader Erik Carlson, who ended up with five points, the first time he was kept out of double figures all year.

Jeff Price had 17 points for the Titans.

“I want to thank God for bringing the team together,” Weatherred said.
