Highlights from the past week in the Idaho Legislature

THEY SAID IT

“I think we need to send the message it’s time to downsize a little bit.” - Rep. Ron Black, R-Twin Falls, trying unsuccessfully to cut state Superintendent of Schools Anne Fox’s budget. Black announced this week that he’s running against Fox.

VOTES

Here are some of North Idaho lawmakers’ votes in the past week:

Young drivers: The Senate voted 15-19 to kill a bill allowing 14-year-olds to get special driver’s licenses good only if a parent or guardian was riding along. Sens. Gordon Crow, Shawn Keough and Jack Riggs voted yes. Sens. Clyde Boatright and Marguerite McLaughlin voted no.

Electioneering: Legislation to expand Idaho’s no-electioneering zone outside polling places from 100 to 300 feet on public property passed the House 50-20 and now goes to the Senate. Voting yes were Reps. Jeff Alltus, Chuck Cuddy, June Judd, Don Pischner and Larry Watson. Voting no were Reps. Jim Clark, Hilde Kellogg, Wayne Meyer and Jim Stoicheff.

Write-ins: The House passed a bill on a 65-4 vote requiring write-in candidates for non-partisan offices to declare their candidacy at least 25 days before the election. Stoicheff, R-Sandpoint, voted no. All other North Idaho representatives voted yes. The bill now goes to the Senate.
