The Washington Huskies kept alive their flickering NCAA tournament hopes and 20th-ranked Stanford dropped a game it felt it needed to win to fulfill its own tournament aspirations.

“If we lose again, it’s going to be real tough,” said the Cardinal’s Brevin Knight.

With Todd MacCulloch scoring 24 points, including the first eight of the second half, and Mark Sanford 19, Washington defeated Stanford 75-61 in Seattle on Saturday. The Huskies held the Cardinal to a season-low point total.

The Huskies (15-8 overall, 8-6 Pac-10) bounced back after a loss to California Thursday night while Stanford (16-7, 9-6) had a three-game winning streak broken.

“This is a win that keeps us where we need to be,” said coach Bob Bender. His Washington team has road games with Arizona State and Arizona next week, then finishes the regular season at home against UCLA and Southern California the following week.

Washington scored the first dozen points in the opening 4:39 of the second half for a 43-31 lead. MacCulloch, a 7-foot sophomore from Canada, got the Huskies’ first four baskets of the half on layups, then made a 6-footer over Tim Young.

Jamie Booker, the Huskies’ defensive stopper, helped hold Knight, Stanford’s point guard who was averaging 16.3 points a game, to 3-for-16 shooting and eight points.

Young, averaging 14.1 points and 8.1 rebounds, had six points and three rebounds in 13 minutes.

Kris Weems led the Cardinal with 12 points.

At Corvallis, Ore., Michael Dickerson scored 29 points to lead the Wildcats’ 15th consecutive win over the Beavers.

Dickerson was 12 for 17 from the field as Arizona (17-7, 9-5 Pac-10) rebounded from Thursday’s 78-72 loss at Oregon.

In its last home game of the season, Oregon State (7-17, 3-12) tried to avenge its 99-48 loss to Arizona in Tucson a month ago, the Beavers’ worst defeat ever. But the young Oregon State squad’s upset hopes disintegrated because of poor free-throw shooting and Arizona’s tight defense.

Dickerson, a junior, became the 27th Arizona player to top 1,000 career points. He has 1,004.

He was in a one-on-one scoring duel with Oregon State’s Corey Benjamin throughout the game. Benjamin made his first eight shots and finished with 26 points on 9-for-11 shooting, but no other Beavers scored in double figures.
