What To Eat

Staff And Wire Reports

Winter camping

First, the good news. If you’re headed outdoors in the winter, you need to pack high-calorie foods.

And the bad news? There really isn’t any bad news if you like to eat.

Consuming enough calories is an important way to prevent hypothermia and give you enough endurance to do whatever you want to do in the cold.

Good winter foods include nuts plus figs, apricots, dates and apples which are delightful dehydrated.

Power Bars contain a good assortment of needed nutritional elements, but they aren’t cold-weather friendly.

Before depending on an energy bar in the winter, put it in the freezer for a few hours to see what happens. If you break a tooth trying to eat it, don’t take it into the backcountry.
