Bail Set At $500,000 For Child-Rape Suspect

From Staff And Wire Reports

A Nisqually man accused of abducting a sleeping 7-year-old girl from her bedroom has pleaded innocent in Pierce County Superior Court to charges of child rape, kidnapping and burglary.

Judge John McCarthy set bail for Raymond Robert Meier at $500,000 on Monday.

Prosecutors allege Meier broke into a Steilacoom house early Friday, abducted the girl and sexually assaulted her.

Meier, 34, was a stranger to the family, not an acquaintance as authorities initially had reported.

The girl told investigators her kidnapper’s truck later broke down and she escaped when he fell asleep. She was found walking down a Lakewood street at 6 a.m. Saturday wearing nothing but a nightgown.

The girl was able to provide police with a description of her kidnapper and said he was driving a white truck.

Police later found an abandoned white truck registered to Meier. In the truck was a pair of panties similar to ones the girl’s parents said she had been wearing.

The girl picked Meier’s photograph out of a group of mug shots shown to her by police, prosecutors said.

Deputy Prosecutor Greg Greer noted at the court hearing that Meier has been convicted of child rape and child molestation in Thurston County, where he is a registered sex offender.
