Man Charged For Synagogue Bomb

Compiled From Wire Services

A Jewish man was charged Tuesday with placing a pipe bomb at a synagogue to disrupt the speech of former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres.

Three children tried to open the bomb after it was found at the Jacksonville Jewish Center on Saturday, nine days after Peres’ speech. About 750 people were evacuated after an adult grabbed the device from the children and turned it over to police, who detonated it.

Harry Shapiro of Jacksonville, a gas station cashier who once worked as a kosher butcher, was charged with placing a destructive device and making a bomb threat. He was later taken to the hospital because he was having “some physical or emotional difficulty,” police spokesman Harry Reagan said.
