One Murder Suspect Held; Second Still Sought

From Staff And Wire Reports

One of two men wanted on a first-degree murder arrest warrant in the slaying of a Tacoma man has surrendered to Pierce County sheriff’s deputies.

Jeffrey Edward Campbell, 26, turned himself in at the Lakewood station late Sunday. He was booked into the county jail.

Authorities still are looking for Campbell’s friend, John Quincy Farrell, 25, of Oakland, Calif., said sheriff’s spokesman Curt Benson.

Campbell and Farrell lost a large sum of money gambling with Tony M. Averitt, 35, in the days before Averitt was shot to death in an apartment complex parking lot on Feb. 11.

In court documents, prosecutors allege that Farrell shot Averitt four times at Campbell’s urging. As Averitt rose to defend himself, Campbell kicked him in the head, prosecutors say.
