English Golfer Carter Found Unconscious

Compiled From Wire Services

David Carter, an English golfer scheduled to play in the Dubai Desert Classic, was found unconscious in his hotel room Tuesday and required emergency brain surgery.

Carter, 24, is to stay at the hospital a few more days. Tournament director Mike Stewart said the golfer was in stable condition.

His head shaved and his speech slow and slurred, Carter said he is only beginning to grasp what happened to him.

“I’m very tired. I feel lost,” he told The Associated Press from his hospital bed. “It’s a bit sudden. It came as a shock to me. I’m still dazed and my head aches, but overall I’m OK.”

European PGA Tour officials said Carter was found Tuesday by friends after complaining of feeling ill earlier in the day during a practice round at the Emirates Golf Club course.

Carter said doctors told him there was a build-up of fluid on his brain. They said it was the result of an accident in South Africa two weeks ago when he hit his head on a waterslide and sustained a concussion.
