Bruins Knock Off Cougars By Four In Pac-10 Opener

Tawana Grimes and Aisha Veasley each scored 17 points for UCLA Thursday night in Pullman as the visiting Bruins knocked off Washington State 77-73 in the Pacific-10 Conference opener for both schools.

Grimes was 9 for 9 from the foul line and Veasley, who also had eight rebounds, made seven of her 11 field-goal attempts for UCLA (7-3), which shot 54.2 percent in the second half to break a 30-30 halftime tie.

Kristin Erickson came off the bench to score 24 points for WSU (5-4), which got only 27 points from its starters.

Jennifer Ludwicki, another reserve, finished with 13 points for the Cougars.

EWU (3-8) squandered a 46-36 lead over the final 14 minutes and dropped its Big Sky Conference opener to the Lumberjacks (7-4) at Reese Court.

Tanya Kirk scored 17 points for Eastern, and teammate Rachel Ferguson added 11. But it wasn’t enough to prevent NAU, which got 16 points and seven rebounds from Jenny Shayani, from staging a late rally.

The Lumberjacks used a pair of free throws by Shayani to ignite a 14-point run that wiped out EWU’s lead and produced a 50-46 lead.
