Easy Frosting Technique Named Top ‘Good Thing’

FROM FOR THE RECORD (Saturday, January 4, 1997): Correction The telephone number to register for classes at Corbin Art Center is 625-6200. The number listed in Friday’s IN Life section was wrong.

The grand prize winner of the Martha Stewart “Good Thing” Contest was announced in the M.S. column Dec. 13. Kathleen Gasta of Newark, Calif., won a trip to Disney World in Florida for her method of creating white chocolate poinsettias for decorating cakes and pies.

The local winner, however, is Diana Henry of Spokane. Henry won a “Martha Stewart Wreaths” book for her idea for quickly frosting cupcakes. After emptying a container of frosting into a bowl, Henry heats it in the microwave just to make it soft and gooey. Then she dips the cupcake into the bowl of frosting and swirls it as she lifts it out. She gets plenty of experience with this method since she is a room mother at Willard Elementary School for her two sons.

Martha Stewart’s staff picked Henry’s idea from among the several dozen contest entries from this area.

Beyond basic black

Brown is back, black is out, country means Tuscany or Provence, not Iowa farmhouse, and piano playing is on the rise. At least according to predictions for 1997 by Better Homes and Gardens.

The magazine says use of cocoa brown in home decor is this year’s trend, as is use of terra cotta, lavender, cerulean and seafoam. Worn elegance in traditional furniture is OK, and there’s interest in harmonic home elements like indoor fountains.

And, when it comes to grocery shopping, don’t be surprised to find a chef at the store who will whip up a meal from the ingredients you select. You carry a beeper so you can shop while your meal is being prepared. Hmmm. We’re not so sure how that would be significantly different from going to a restaurant.

Take a class - or two

A full slate of crafts-related seminars begins in January and runs through March at Corbin Art Center.

The classes range from a 2-1/2-hour class in making beeswax candles (Jan. 28/Feb. 22) to Creative Rubber Stamps (Feb. 4), Faux Finishes (Feb. 8/Feb. 26) and making a Victorian Valentine wreath (Jan. 27).

What to do now?

What with all the holiday decorations, who can blame you for losing the TV remote control? Panic sets in and the search is on, and unlike cordless phones, remote-control devices don’t have a pager so you can locate them under all that wrapping paper.

According to a Magnavox survey, 43 percent of women and 33 percent of men lose the remote in or under the furniture. So look there first. But a note of caution before the men out there begin to crow over their superior ability to keep track of the remote control: Men are more than twice as likely to leave remotes in the refrigerator or throw them away in the garbage.
