Bus Careens Off Cliff, Killing 37, Injuring 3

Compiled From Wire Services

Thirty-seven people were killed Friday when their bus careened off a cliff on a foggy road, bouncing and tumbling 2,500 feet down a mountainside, police said.

The crash, one of Colombia’s worst in recent years, occurred near the town of Carrizal, 430 miles southwest of the capital, Bogota, Officer Ricardo Welches of the highway patrol said.

Amid the fog, the driver apparently failed to see a big rock on the road, Welches said. The bus hit the rock and rolled over the cliff, he said.

Of the 40 people aboard, only a man, a teenage female and a 2-year-old survived, Welches said. All were injured.
