Bsu Women Humble Sloppy Bulldogs, 76-45

Gonzaga University, hoping to build on Thursday’s upset victory over Idaho, came out Saturday night with a shooting touch colder than recent sales of sunblock and suffered a 76-45 non-conference women’s basketball loss to Boise State in Martin Centre.

It was not a dream tuneup for the Bulldogs (2-10), who open West Coast Conference play Friday night at Santa Clara.

Boise State (2-9) got 21 points from reserve Heidi Umthun and 14 from starting guard Kellie Lewis. But it was the Broncos’ defense that decided the outcome.

GU made only 15 of 59 field-goal attempts (25.4 percent) and turned the ball over 27 times.

The Bulldogs, who had only one player score in double figures, started well and were tied at 9 less than 5 minutes into the game. But BSU, behind a couple of steals and transition baskets by Tawnya Gray, scored the next nine points and never let GU make another serious threat.

The Broncos were up 36-19 at intermission and outscored the Bulldogs 40-26 over the final 20 minutes to pick up their second consecutive win.

GU was a miserable 1 for 12 from 3-point range and received only 16 points from its other four starters. Reserve Kristin Deal scored eight points and pulled down five rebounds.
