Wentz, Hepton Sizzle At Playfair

Jockey Marty Wentz rode five winners, three of them saddled by trainer Fred Hepton, Sunday as Playfair Race Course completed the first week of its 60th horse racing season.

Wentz, who had mounts in all eight local races, also finished second once and third once while accounting for the top riding feat of the new meet. Playfair and Emerald Downs in Auburn are combining races via satellite under a Washington Horse Racing Commission-mandated experiment in dual-card programming.

After finishing second in the first race, Wentz won the second aboard Jeremy’s Son ($4), the third with Spokane Charlie ($4.20), the fourth astride Scottie Card ($3.60), the sixth with One Sock Chalk ($5.20) and the seventh on Sister Charlene ($3.40).

Hepton trains Spokane Charlie, One Sock Chalk and Sister Charlene. Spokane Charlie and Sister Charlene race for Paul Gillespie of Spokane.
