Poll: Most Say Gingrich Should Be Replaced

Associated Press

A CNN/USAToday/Gallup poll conducted over the weekend found that a clear majority of Americans, 65 percent, and a bare majority of Republicans, 51 percent, think Gingrich should be replaced.

On the eve of congressional Republicans’ vote on whether to re-elect Gingrich, 41 percent of Americans in the poll say he should resign from Congress altogether after admitting ethical lapses.

But 75 percent said Gingrich’s violations are “the kinds of things most politicians do in Washington,” according to the poll Friday through Sunday of 1,022 Americans. The results were subject to sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

A CBS News poll also released Monday found 51 percent of Americans saying the charges against Gingrich are serious enough to justify his replacement as speaker, 33 percent said they are not and the rest didn’t know.

The CBS poll of 680 American adults on Sunday found 68 percent saying the GOP House majority should not re-elect Gingrich as speaker before the ethics panel completes its actions. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 4 percentage points.
