Wcc Honors Gu’s Rollins, Ex-CV Star Hepton

(From Replay, January 9, 1997): Mead volleyball standout Jessica Sanborn, the Greater Spokane League Most Valuable Player who committed to UCLA, did not lead the league in kills the past two seasons. The league does not compile statistics.

Gonzaga University guard Lorenzo Rollins is the West Coast Conference men’s basketball player of the month for December.

In eight games, the senior from Tacoma averaged 20 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.3 steals and 0.5 blocked shots.

He scored in double figures in all eight games, including 30 against Idaho State in the Albertson Holiday Classic in Boise, matching his career high.

Rollins, named to all-tournament teams at Colorado State and Boise State, where the Zags finished second both times, leads the WCC in scoring at 18.2 points a game.

Gonzaga (7-5), which had a 5-3 record in December, enters West Coast Conference play Thursday at home against Santa Clara.

Randy Moffatt, the Community College of Spokane’s leading scorer, may be lost for the season after fracturing his right thumb in Saturday night’s 74-64 loss at Wenatchee.

Moffatt, a sophomore from Medical Lake, scored 19 points before fracturing his thumb in three places with 7 minutes left to play.

Coach Sam Brasch said Moffatt is to have surgery today to insert a pin in the thumb.

“Doctors say a minimum of four weeks, but that is being very optimistic,” Brasch said.

“No one has worked harder to become a better player,” Brasch added. “He had become a very fine four-year prospect. He set the tone for our team in many areas. He will be sorely missed. I feel terrible for Randy.”

Moffatt, averaging 15 points, also leads the team in 3-point and free-throw shooting.

Women’s basketball

Kristin Hepton, a sophomore at the University of Portland from Spokane, is the West Coast Conference women’s basketball player of the month for December.

The Central Valley graduate led the Pilots (11-1) to a 7-1 record during the month by averaging a team-leading 14.9 points and 6.5 rebounds a game. Her 12.8 season average ties for fifth place in the WCC.

She has been brilliant from the free-throw line, making 25 of 26 last month. The miss snapped a string of 31 in a row. For the season, she’s made a WCC-leading 32 of 34.

Volleyball

Jessica Sanborn, the Greater Spokane League’s most valuable player, has informed UCLA coach Andy Banachowski that she will accept a scholarship to play for the Bruins, her family announced.

The 6-foot-3 Sanborn, a senior at Mead, led the GSL in kills from her middle hitter position the last two seasons. The Panthers finished third at state this past season.
