Heidi Mccullough North Central Year: Freshman Sport: Gymnastics Event: All-Around

Heidi McCullough has a lofty goal: earning a college gymnastics scholarship.

She made that goal a little more difficult when she turned out for the North Central High School team.

“I was planning on getting a college scholarship out of club gymnastics,” the NC freshman said. “I didn’t think you could (get a scholarship) out of high school gymnastics. I think if I have a goal that I want to make, I know I can go for it and I know I’ll work at it as hard as I can to get it.”

Besides, after 10 years at Northwest Gymnastics, she needed a break and she’s enjoying the camaraderie at NC.

She showed she could compete with the best of the Greater Spokane League, winning the bars and placing second on the beam at the Eastside Invitational Event Championships at Mead last weekend.

“I’m not a super-great coach, maybe I’ve even coached her down a couple of 10ths since she’s been here,” NC coach Bob Litton said. “But if she continues to work hard, I would eventually like to see her be a state champion.

“I’m certainly pleased she wanted to come out for high school gymnastics. We struggle at North Central. I enjoy coaching kids that come in and don’t know anything, but it’s nice having a club kid once in a while.” , DataTimes ILLUSTRATION: Color Photo
