Eagle Scout Awards Earned By Local Scouts

Ryan McFarlane and Kenny Assmus have earned their Eagle Scout awards.

McFarlane, a member of Boy Scout Troop 410, is a seventh-grade student at Horizon Junior High School. His service project was to plan and supervise landscaping at the Chester Community Cemetery entrance and reflecting area. He is the son of Dan and Mary McFarlane, Spokane.

Assmus, a new resident in Mead, chose as his service project to build a “distraction cart,” a unit made to wheel up to the bedside of patients recovering from surgery. The cart houses toys and equipment to help patients focus energies from pain to comfort. It was donated to the Children’s Hospital in Denver.

Alicia Faires, a member of Girl Scout Troop 530, has earned the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. Her service project consisted of a meteor observation at Starr Butte, where she coordinated the event with Spokane Astronomical Society and the International Meteor Society. A senior at University High School and a member of the color guard, she is the daughter of Joe and April Faires, Spokane.

Robert Dirks, a freshman at Wabash College in Indiana, has been selected for the Advanced Placement State Scholar Award for 1996. The award is given each year to a man and woman student in each state who have achieved the highest results in the AP Examination program.

A 1996 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, Dirks has also been honored by the U.S. Achievement Academy with a $500 scholastic for his accomplishments as a member of LC’s math team. He is the son of Mike and Suree Dirks, Spokane.

Riki Pitstick, a junior occupational therapy and biology major at Carroll College in Helena, and Erica Arthur, majoring in social work there, attended the National Alcohol and Drug Prevention Conference sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education at Park City, Utah. They are both Spokane residents.

Washington State University student Bruce Hunter is the winner of a $1,000 pharmacy scholarship sponsored by Kmart Corp. He was selected for the award based on his excellent performance in the Kmart Pharmacy internship program at a Spokane store.

Carroll College, Helena, elected the following students to positions on the Associated Students Council: Doug Tooke, a junior elementary education and theology major from Mead, was elected vice president; and Zuly Eden, a junior biology major from Spokane was named secretary.

Andy Ford, associate professor in the environmental science and regional planning at Washington State University, received the Jay Wright Forrester Award. The award recognizes outstanding academic contributions to the field of system dynamics.

Ford, who came to WSU in 1992, is managing editor of the System Dynamics Society’s journal, System Dynamics Review.

Lynn Stephens, an accounting professor at Eastern Washington University, has been selected as the E. Clair Daniels Distinguished Professor of Accounting.

In that position she will establish a center to assist practicing accountants in meeting professional requirements and encourage professional development and interaction between practicing accountants and EWU’s faculty and students.

She has taught accounting at EWU for 15 years.

Tyrone Hoard Jr. has been chosen to receive the $1,350 Andy Greathouse Memorial Scholarship for the 1996-97 academic year. A student junior at Eastern Washington University, he is a physical education major and a 1994 graduate of Shadle Park High School. He is the son of Kuison and Tyrone Hoard, Spokane.
